The 10-minute weekly money check-in that keeps your budget on track

Most people only look at their money when something goes wrong: the balance is lower than expected, or a bill arrives that they forgot. By then it is too late to change much. A short, regular look at your money makes a big difference, because you notice small problems while they are still small.

Here is a simple weekly routine that takes about ten minutes. Pick a fixed time, such as Sunday evening, and stick to it.

Why weekly?

A month is too long. By the time you look, you have forgotten what half of the spends were, and the month is over. A day is too short to see any pattern. A week is just right: you still remember what happened, there is enough data to see a trend, and there is time left in the month to do something about it.

The ten-minute routine

1. Catch up on missing entries (2 minutes)

Think back over the week. Did you pay cash for anything? Did anyone pay for you? Did you forget to note something? Add the missing entries now. Looking at your bank or UPI history can help jog your memory.

2. Check for mistakes (1 minute)

Scan your most recent entries. Is any amount wrong? Is something under the wrong label? Fixing a typo now takes seconds. Finding it a month later takes much longer.

3. Answer the pending ones (1 minute)

If you started a payment and never confirmed whether it went through, now is the time to settle that. Otherwise your totals can be off without you noticing.

4. Look at who owes whom (2 minutes)

Check your balances with friends and family. Does anyone owe you money from last week? A quick, polite message now is much easier than one in two months. If you owe someone, pay it and mark it settled. See our udhaar guide for how to keep this clean.

5. Review the month so far (3 minutes)

Look at three things:

6. Pick one small adjustment (1 minute)

End by choosing a single thing to change for the coming week. Not ten things, one. Maybe fewer food deliveries, or taking the bus twice. One small, specific change is far more likely to stick.

The home screen is designed for exactly this check-in. At a glance you can see what is waiting for your confirmation, how much you have spent this month compared with last month, where it went by category, your most recent entries (which you can edit or delete if something is wrong), and who owes whom. It takes the ten minutes down to a quick scroll.
