How to track your UPI spending when you use GPay, PhonePe and Paytm

UPI has made paying so easy that spending has become almost invisible. You scan, you tap, you are done in three seconds. At the end of the month, your balance is lower than you expected, and you have no idea where it went.

If you use more than one UPI app, it gets worse. Some payments are in Google Pay, some in PhonePe, some in Paytm, and no single app shows you the full picture. Here is how to fix that.

Why UPI spending is hard to see

Your bank statement shows every UPI payment, but not in a way that helps. A line like “UPI/3817…/swiggy@icici” does not tell you whether it was lunch, a gift or groceries, and it mixes in everything else going through the account.

Each UPI app has its own history too, but it only covers payments made inside that app. If you pay your rickshaw in Google Pay and your friend in PhonePe, neither app has the whole story.

Three ways to track it

1. Read the bank statement

This is accurate, but slow and unfriendly. It is useful for checking at the end of the month, but poor for understanding your habits.

2. Use an app that reads your SMS

Some apps read the messages your bank sends and build a record from them automatically. This saves typing, but it means giving an app access to all your SMS, which many people are not comfortable with, and the automatic sorting is often wrong.

3. Note each payment yourself

This sounds like more work, but it takes only a few seconds if the tool is fast, and it gives you the best record: you decide the category and the person, and you never have to give anyone access to your bank or messages. This is the approach HisaabRakho takes.

A simple habit that works

  1. Note the payment in the same moment you make it. Not later. Later never happens.
  2. Add two or three words. “Chai”, “auto”, “groceries”, “sent to mom”. You can sort the detail out afterwards.
  3. Look at the total by category weekly. Patterns appear fast: maybe food delivery is bigger than you thought.
  4. Check against your bank statement once a month. If the totals roughly match, your notes are good.

An honest note about confirming payments

A UPI app cannot tell another app whether a payment succeeded. When you leave one app to pay in another, the first one does not find out what happened. That is a limit of how UPI deep links work, not a bug in any particular app.

HisaabRakho handles this honestly: when you start a UPI payment from it, the entry is saved as pendinguntil you confirm it. Your totals only count the payments you confirmed, so a payment you cancelled does not sneak into your spending.

Doing this with HisaabRakho

You can scan any UPI QR code, enter the amount and a few words, and then open your UPI app (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, CRED and others) to pay. The entry is logged in the same flow, so there is nothing extra to remember. If you close the UPI app without coming back, the payment waits for you on the home screen until you confirm it.

There is nothing to download: it runs in your browser, and you can add it to your home screen so it opens like an app. For the habit that makes the biggest difference, see how small daily spends quietly add up.
